Microalgae cultivation in the Flexby project is a sustainable and innovative approach to biofuel production. The project carefully selects specific microalgae strains based on lipid content, growth rate, and adaptability to environmental conditions. These strains are cultivated in a nutrient-rich medium, such as domestic wastewater, and growth conditions are optimised for maximum biomass yield.

Harvesting techniques like centrifugation or flocculation are employed to extract lipids essential for biofuel production. The extracted lipids are then converted into biofuels through a pyrolysis process, with the project utilising an advanced microwave pyrolysis technique.

By-products such as biochar, syngas, and bio-hydrogen are efficiently utilised, promoting a circular economy approach. The biofuels produced are targeted for commercialisation in heavy transport and energy sectors, aligning with sustainability goals and emphasising resource efficiency.

The Flexby project represents a significant step towards sustainable biofuel production, showcasing the potential of microalgae as a renewable energy source and contributing to a greener future in the biofuel industry.
